Joana Ho

Thanks to my parents, I grew up having a bit of the biologist’s point of view. When we were kids, my sister and I would try to determine if the shrimp we were eating were male or female, and we knew we couldn’t go around smelling the flowers because they could be filled with fungi. Only later in life did I discover this would be the very thing to turn me.

I’ve always been proud of my parents, because of their knowledge and desire to make the world a better place, but I never thought I would follow in their footsteps. Alas, here I am today, a biology student at the University of São Paulo.

I haven’t yet found myself in this large, rich area of science, but I think only few people really know what they like to do for living. I hope, in some way, that I will fit myself into a small part of the big picture.

Drawing came to me as way to spend my time, and slowly it became something very valuable for me. I started drawing clothes, but then I began to try new things, new mixtures. My goal was never for it to become my profession; I just liked to draw what came to mind and lose myself in my ideas.  

Later I discovered that nothing is more precious than the peace you get finishing something and finding new lines and features that you didn’t know you were capable of. Studying biology made this discovery even more interesting because it helped me find new lines and features occurring in nature that I hadn’t previously thought to mix.

Today, time I get to spend with a pen to paper makes me feel wonderful, and I greatly value this time I have to invent new drawings.

As a biologist and a lover of drawing, I hope to find a way to unite these two passions. But mostly, I hope to find a way to show others the beautiful and wonderfully interesting things we have all around us in this world.
